Gun violence in America
Although gun ownership in the United States is rooted in the second amendment of the constitution wherein a well regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; this policy is disturbing considering the numerous mass murders that are rocking the free world.
Recent years have seen worst mass shootings in American history. These include the 2017 shooting at a musical festival in Las Vegas that killed 58 people, the 2018 Florida shooting at a high school where 18 people died and the 2019 El Paso shooting in Texas where 22 lives were lost.
According to CDC 39,773 people died of gun related injuries in 2017. These deaths were the most since 1968. Gun murders have rose to 32% between 2014 and 2017. Currently CDC indicates that 100 lives are lost daily in America as a result of gun violence.
It appears like everyone is at risk of gun violence and anyone can be the next casualty. The current gun policy seems to have loopholes and it is for these that people are being slaughtered mercilessly each day.
The US Supreme Court has upheld some firearm restrictions such as a ban on concealed weapons and on possession of certain types of weapons. It also prohibits the sale of guns to minors, convicted criminals, the mentally disabled, dishonorably discharged military personnel.
There have been efforts from the Obama administration to try and contain gun violence through instilling tough regulations on fire arm dealers that required them to obtain federal licenses and background checks yet the violence is yet to diminish.
There is need to enact more strict measures on gun business since it is the sole source from which civilians can access fire arms. If it means enacting an overhaul of the entire gun policy to enact that which limits and restrains current operations this would mean the difference between life and death for innocent Americans.
The current law isn’t followed to the latter and it is quite challenging to predict the mental stability of someone over time. These are the areas that require probing as a solution is sought to contain the American gun menace.
