Topic: Nation-State capability to conduct activities in cyberspace

This week we focus on the capabilities of the Nation-state and its ability to conduct activities in Cyber Space. One great example is the People’s Republic of China (PRC). As we have seen in recent years, the PRC has become an increasingly sophisticated international player in the military, diplomatic, and economic domains. The same holds true in Cyber Space. This week’s forum asks you to select a country (it can be the PRC) and address the following:.

Complete the following:

1. Name and brief description of the organization
2. Estimated level of sophistication
3. Example(s) of known or suspected cyber attacks from that entity (other than those mentioned in our case studies)

Topic: Market Structures and Pricing Decisions Applied Problems

Market Structures and Pricing Decisions Applied
Problems
Please complete the following two applied problems:
Problem 1:
Robert’s New Way Vacuum Cleaner Company is a newly started small business that produces vacuum
cleaners and belongs to a monopolistically competitive market. Its demand curve for the product is
expressed as Q = 5000 – 25P where Q is the number of vacuum cleaners per year and P is in dollars.
Cost estimation processes have determined that the firm’s cost function is represented by TC = 1500 +
20Q + 0.02Q2.
Show all of your calculations and processes. Describe your answer for each question in complete
sentences, whenever it is necessary.
a. What are the profit-maximizing price and output levels? Explain them and calculate algebraically for
equilibrium P (price) and Q (output). Then, plot the MC (marginal cost), D (demand), and MR
(marginal revenue) curves graphically and illustrate the equilibrium point.
b. How much economic profit do you expect that Robert’s company will make in the first year?
c. Do you expect this economic profit level to continue in subsequent years? Why or why not?
Problem 2:
Greener Grass Company (GGC) competes with its main rival, Better Lawns and Gardens (BLG), in the
supply and installation of in-ground lawn watering systems in the wealthy western suburbs of a major
east-coast city. Last year, GGC’s price for the typical lawn system was $1,900 compared with BLG’s
price of $2,100. GGC installed 9,960 systems, or about 60% of total sales and BLG installed the rest.
(No doubt many additional systems were installed by do-it-yourself homeowners because the parts are
readily available at hardware stores.)
GGC has substantial excess capacity–it could easily install 25,000 systems annually, as it has all the
necessary equipment and can easily hire and train installers. Accordingly, GGC is considering
expansion into the eastern suburbs, where the homeowners are less wealthy. In past years, both GGC
and BLG have installed several hundred systems in the eastern suburbs but generally their sales
efforts are met with the response that the systems are too expensive. GGC has hired you to
recommend a pricing strategy for both the western and eastern suburb markets for this coming season.
You have estimated two distinct demand functions, as follows:
Qw =2100 – 6.25Pgw + 3Pbw + 2100Ag – 1500Ab + 0.2Yw
for the western market and
Qe = 36620 – 25Pge + 7Pbe + 1180Ag – 950Ab + 0.085Ye
for the eastern market, where Q refers to the number of units sold; P refers to price level; A refers to
advertising budgets of the firms (in millions); Y refers to average disposable income levels of the
potential customers; the subscripts w and e refer to the western and eastern markets, respectively; and
the subscripts g and b refer to GGC and BLG, respectively. GGC expects to spend $1.5 million (use Ag
= 1.5) on advertising this coming year and expects BLG to spend $1.2 million (use Ab = 1.2) on
advertising. The average household disposable income is $60,000 in the western suburbs and $30,000
in the eastern suburbs. GGC does not expect BLG to change its price from last year because it has
already distributed its glossy brochures (with the $2,100 price stated) in both suburbs, and its TV
commercial has already been produced. GGC’s cost structure has been estimated as TVC = 750Q +
0.005Q2, where Q represents single lawn watering systems.
Show all of your calculations and processes. Describe your answer for each item below in complete
sentences, whenever it is necessary.
a. Derive the demand curves for GGC’s product in each market.
b. Derive GGC’s marginal revenue (MR) and marginal cost (MC) curves in each market. Show
graphically GGC’s demand, MR, and MC curves for each market.
c. Derive algebraically the quantities that should be produced and sold, and the prices that should be
charged, in each market.
d. Calculate the price elasticities of demand in each market and discuss these in relation to the prices
to be charged in each market.
e. Add a short note to GGC management outlining any reservations and qualifications you may have
concerning your price recommendations.

Topic: Natural Disaster Emergency Plans

Description

Preparedness is a key element of any Emergency Operations Plan. The dynamics of any natural disaster unfolds in real time with inherent uncertainty and involves risk to life and property. Preparedness planning is an essential process to consider how to identify tasks, what are available local, regional, and federal resources that might be needed, the potential populace to consider and who has jurisdictional authority and responsibility to act. Participation of all stakeholders is essential in the planning process to reduce duplication of effort, develop supporting partnerships, and identify common operational processes. Research and analysis of how other nations conduct their own natural disaster preparedness planning offers insight into the social, political, intellectual, and technological driving forces that influence the planning processes and how these and current best practices/lessons learned can be integrated for community and operational understanding.
Considering what you learned from your community’s emergency planning in comparison with what you learned from other countries, develop a brief emergency plan to address a high-level natural disaster risk in your community, paying particular attention to the gaps you have uncovered in your research.

Assignment Guidelines

In 3-5 pages, develop an emergency management plan. The plan must address the following at minimum:

Situation and assumptions
What are the circumstances around the event you consider at most risk in your community (you may provide a brief scenario)
Authority
What is the chain of command? Explain.
Purpose
What are the objectives of the plan? Explain.
Concept of operations
What are the functions and tasks that will be performed to fulfill the plan’s goals and missions?
Organization and assignment of responsibilities
Who is in charge of specific functions and tasks? Why?
Direction and control
How will the processes of the plan stay on course? Explain.
Plan development and maintenance
What are some key factors that must be taken into consideration during the plan development phase?

Topic: Visual Analysis of the Urban Community Space of the Film “Do the Right Thing”

Description

Course: Cinema & Space

Title: Visual Analysis of the Urban Community Space of the Film “Do the Right Thing”

Film: “Do the Right Thing” – Spike Lee – 1989

Words: 1.000 only for word file

References: At least 8 & 2. System Harvard (citation)

Structure of the essay: 1. Abstract, 2. Keywords, 3. Introduction, 4. Central Dramatic question (argument), 5. Define Community, 6. Research on the concept of space (social, political, psychological, feminist, aesthetic, etc.) Attention to the lesson title., 7. Methodology, 8. Compare, 9. Conclusion

Remarks:

1) What’s the theme of the movie? By the word theme, we mean the core of the movie. Every director’s choice supports the theme of the film. For example, the composition of the frame, the selection of spaces, the style of acting, etc. support the theme of the film!

2) Remember that the work should support the course title: Cinema and space and more specifically urban space. Why did the director make these urban space choices?

3) Definitely to analyze why the director chose this narrow – confined space in a building block. If it was a bigger space, then I would have had another movie.

4) Certainly in the Essay, the following must be mentioned:
a. Geography of space (urban) and why?
b. Acting style and why?
c. Colors and why? One possible answer here is that we have many colors because of the many leaves that live together.
d. Variety of scene coverage and narrative analysis.
e. Lots of POV and why?
f. It is very important to identify patterns in the film… Geographical patterns, The heat (all movie) pattern, etc.

5) I notice he (Spike Lee) takes the stereotype and overthrows it. Explain…
6) To explain why in each scene, we have a conflict
7) In terms of videos and snapshots I can use what I show you or whatever you think is right)

Topic: Setting the Virgin on Fire

Description

Double spaced, spell checked and Chicago Footnote Style paper 5 pages long and must include a bibliography and footnotes. It must include page numbers.
Here are the concrete instructions. Please read Marjorie Becker, Setting the Virgin on Fire: Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacán Peasants and The Redemption of the Mexican Revolution. I am for fortunate enough to have been told that this book changed my field and altered the way people understood Mexico’s most important 20th century president Lazaro Cardenas. That is because I conducted extensive, dangerous, grass roots research for years in Mexico City and throughout the crucial western Mexican state of Michoacán. The book, a cultural history, reveals the grassroots movement I discovered in response to Cardenas and his followers attempt to alter rural culture. Those attempts included the development of a massive land reform, the establishment of rural teachers and agrarian agents who established governmental schools, a land reform, a new politics, a new health program, a new way to consider institutions (church, state) an effort to re-invent “the Indian” and to affect gender. It was Michoacán peasants responses to that 1934-1940 program that amounted to a movement, as peasants boycotted schools, sneaked in illegal priests, accepted the land reform yet altered it, denounced shady politicians, and crucially, developed revolutionary women’s leagues prompting a group of remarkable women to seize a village church and transform it by dancing. After you read the book, I want you to write a 5 page paper assessing the way this rural dance changed Mexican gender relations, its revolutionary, its history.
