For this assessment you will write a 7000 word summary report on your agreed topic.

The dissertation process will last throughout the year. You will be expected to be continually working on this large piece of work throughout both semesters. There are 4 hours a week dedicated to this module that you should be engaging in, even if not in class time.

After submitting your research proposal, we will find you a supervisor to work with on your project. The project that you and they conduct may be a specific project for you, a project of theirs you can work to develop in your own way or perhaps part of a larger team (most likely with primary data collection projects to maximise productivity). You will have specific meetings with this supervisor and they will guide your project specifically. Exact structure advice will be given by your supervisors. However, your report dissertation should contain detail on:

  • Your research question
  • The rationale/context of your study
  • *Previous literature pertinent to your research question*
  • Your methodology (search terms/strategy for literature/systematic reviews or questions/activities and sample for primary data collection)
  • *Your results and discussion (what do your findings mean for the research question/previous work? Do you support or contradict previous assumptions?)*
  • A conclusion (rounding up your dissertation into a neat summary)

*Noted in asterisks are situations where variation may occur*. For example, a systematic review would blend the previous literature with results and discussion and a quantitative report will separate results and discussion in to two sections.

Due to the large amount of potential variation is Dissertation topic and structure, it is difficult to offer further generic advice. All assessments will be marked against the ACE criteria (see section 2.3), where Answering the Question will include further methodological detail.

1.1          Marking Criteria

Your mark will be set in relation to the ACE-marking scheme. The scheme contains three criteria developed to outline the components of a high marked assessment. It is important to review your assessment before submission to check that these criteria are adequately met. See section 3 of the Module Study Guide for more details on looking for help with completing assessments.The ACE marking scheme criteria are:

A – Answer the question

You must address all parts of the set question in a coherent, efficient and convincing way. It is worth referring to the set question when drafting your assignment. It is also important to ‘signpost’ your answers to the question in the text. This means that you should guide the reader to the theme of each paragraph and how this is relevant to the overall essay question. Make it clear to the reader what you want to achieve in each and every paragraph. Be mindful of the overall narrative. Think on the themes of the paragraphs and how they best might be ordered to convey your message to the reader. Avoid long, run-on, sentences, spelling errors and contractions.Always check your work for clarity.

C – Critique and evaluate

Perform an objective analysis. A strong piece of work does not just describe or present information, but shows knowledge that research has limitations. No source of evidence is perfect and you should try to acknowledge both strengths and weaknesses to position your arguments. Tips: Present the evidence in context:
i) What did the cited piece of evidence set out to demonstrate? ii) How did they do this? iii) What did they find? iv) Why should we trust this evidence? v) Any particular issues?It is rare that an essay will be an advocacy piece of writing where you will be asked to ‘win’ an argument. Therefore you will not ‘lose’ any marks for showing awareness of weaknesses in the evidence raised.

E – Explore the wider literature

The best assignments show independence on behalf of the author. Reading beyond the lecture materials shows you can find the best evidence to support the particular argument. To best critique and evaluate evidence quality, it is essential to read the primary sources of information (not just secondary citations of evidence, such as in textbooks). This allows a better understanding of how this evidence was obtained. Importantly, this involves an understanding of the hierarchy of evidence. Avoiding poor quality sources and citing more good quality sources are essential to good academic practice.Here, citation and referencing practice is also considered. Avoid over-quoting (quoting large chunks of text from another source). Avoid plagiarism (taking the words of others without attribution). Make sure citations and references are in the correct Harvard format (essential for markers to follow your evidence trail).
