Formal assessment will be through one essay of a maximum of 4500 words (excluding references).
The topic for this essay will be one of the course themes in which you have a particular interest, and which you would like to explore in more depth.
Following topics are for your reference only:
8. Critique the bias over non-native English speakers’ use of language in a particular context (e.g. in a given community) or a particular domain (e.g. academic publication).
Your assignment will be assessed according to the following criteria:
1 Use of relevant literature: you are expected to sample and select from a range of key sources on the topic of your choice. We would expect you to draw on approximately 10- 15 journal articles and/or book chapters.
2 Quality of referencing: you should cite and quote your sources appropriately in the body of your text and provide a properly formatted Bibliography at the end.
3 Coherence of structure: Organise your material in a way that will be easily followed by your readers. In order to do this, we recommend that you use headings and sub-headings.
4 Grasp of key concepts and issues: you should demonstrate that you have understood and are able to explain the concepts and issues relating to the topic on which you are writing.
5 Quality of description and analysis: you should both describe and analyse the issues and/or debates relating to your topic.
6 Clarity and development of argument: you should decide on your own position in relation to the topic you are discussing and develop an argument that reflects it.
7 Evidence of independent and critical thought: you should explore and explain the orientations of your sources, and also demonstrate an ability to think independently about them and, if relevant, to criticise them.
8 Clarity of expression: given the nature of this course, we do not expect you necessarily to use native-like English, but to write in a way that is intelligible to an international readership.
9 Presentation: your work should be well presented with assignment title, page numbers, bibliography etc. all present, and carefully checked for typos.
