The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Film Review

Review of book, film, critical, or other work (1,500 words)
The aim of this exercise is to develop skills of writing for and communicating with a non-academic audience. You should select a book, film, critical work, or similar Tolkien-inspired work or activity to review for a particular audience.
The review should consist of three parts: target publication, review proper, and commentary.
Target Publication
Explain which publication you are writing for. This may be The Guardian, New York Review of Books, Total Film, New Zealand Herald, a particular academic or popular journal, an online site, and so on, and on. How should you adapt your writing style for this publication? Who is likely to read the review? What assumptions can you make about their prior knowledge of Tolkien and their own frames of cultural reference? What are you trying to achieve in the review? (Suggested about 250 words)
Review Proper
The review as it should appear. You may wish to include suggested illustrations or cross-references, title and pull-quotes, and even optional cuts (the Times Literary Supplement, for example, used to have a reputation for simply cutting the final paragraph of over-long reviews – so if you don’t want to lose your conclusion, you could suggest another paragraph that could go). (Suggested about 1,000 words)
Commentary
Reflections on how writing a review differs from academic work. This may include how you have adapted your writing style, how you cope without references, and/or how you have responded to the expectations of your audience. (Suggested about 250 words)
