Week 1 – Assignment: Evaluate Your Perception of Effective Leadership
Leaders serve in many roles. Some are teachers, parents, or leaders of Fortune 500 companies. Whatever our role, the study of organizational leadership can benefit us all. To be a positive leader means to act with dignity, morality, compassion, and even bravery while setting the example for organizational stakeholders and inspiring others to follow.
To be a leader, one must be in control, be comfortable with responsibility, and make sound decisions. Today, numerous consulting firms dedicate their resources and time to teaching and training employees on the subject of leadership.
Value of Organizational Leadership
The philosophical underpinnings of organizational theory offer the opportunity to explore, examine, elucidate, and evaluate your current understanding of organizational leadership. Much can be learned by understanding a leader’s style. As employees traverse obstacles at work, they often attempt to predict how their leader will recommend and implement strategies to successfully complete identified tasks.
Understanding leadership style can provide great insight to a leader’s problem-solving skills and decision-making methods. Some leaders are participatory, others are micromanagers, and others allow subordinates to be creative. Students studying leadership should constantly seek new leadership traits, principles, and practices to follow. Achieving leadership excellence is a life-long journey.
Draft a critical reflection regarding your current beliefs, assumptions, and understandings of organizational leadership. Reflect on how the assigned readings have influenced, negated, and/or affirmed your suppositions relative to organizational leadership at this point. Address the following in your reflection:
• Explain your current beliefs, assumptions, and understandings about organizational leadership.
• Determine why organizational leadership is important for the success of an organization.
• Indicate how the assigned readings have affected your suppositions relative to organizational leadership.
• Predict how you see yourself growing in your understanding of organizational leadership principles.
• Provide specific examples to support your thoughts.
Support your reflection with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.
