The article talks about some of the positive and negative effects of using the HPV vaccine Gardasil 9 for prevention of the second most common cause of cancer death in women worldwide. This is a very controversial topic and one that hasn’t died down since it was introduced back in 2006, when it was approved by the FDA. At the time, the vaccine was only on the market for girls and women, but within a few short years, it was also suggested for boys and young men as well. The vaccine is designed to protect women against HPV 16 & 18, which are responsible for 70% the cervical cancers diagnoses worldwide. It also protects against HPV 6 & 11 that are responsible for more than 90% of genital warts in both males and females. Some of the controversial and negative aspects of the vaccine are; we don’t know the duration of protection provided by the vaccine, the cost of the vaccine being $120 per vaccine with 3 separate injections needed, and the fact that the public feels that giving the vaccine would give girls an incentive to be more “promiscuous”, therefore leading to more STD risks.
I feel that this article has a wealth of information that could be helpful with my paper on the pros and cons of the HPV vaccine Gardasil 9 in young girls and boys. The author is knowledgeable in the field of Gynecology and has done extensive research on the risks and benefits of using the HPV vaccine. This article will provide me with more supportive information regarding Gardasil 9, but it also has several negative points that can be used to argue the use of the vaccine in today’s youth.
