In order to satisfy your requirement for Composition II, you have been asked to write a 6-8 page (not including the Works Cited) critical essay in which you evaluate the cultural significance of a primary text of your choice from popular culture. Possible subjects include comic books, graphic novels, pop songs, advertisements, photographs, visual art, movies, music videos and TV shows.
As we discussed in class, the paper must provide a semiotic analysis (papers that do not will be considered to be off topic and will automatically receive 0 points), and it must present an argument. Your topic must be preapproved by me, or the paper will receive 0 points.
The paper also must have a thesis, or main point, included in the introduction and should include at least four body paragraphs and a conclusion.
For this paper, you must use at least five sources, one of which should be your primary text. The Library homepage is a very rich source of easily accessible information. Use these databases (Tri-C’s card catalog, OhioLink, Academic Search Complete) as well as other Internet search engines to collect your information. If you have any questions about using these tools, ask the librarians or me.
Your critical essay must adhere to MLA guidelines and should be double-spaced and typed in Times New Roman 12-pt font. It should use correct margins and headers and include a Works Cited page. A title is required for your paper, but no title pages or cover pages please.
Be sure to put your name, the name of your teacher, the name of the class, and the date in the upper-left hand corner. Your title for the paper should be centered and capitalized (but not in all caps) and should reflect the point of the essay.

Section 1: The Hero and Heroine in Film Do you think your film choice (make certain to include the title of your film) involves initiatory elements of the hero quest, heroine quest in fairy tales, or both?
Also, does the gender of the main protagonist in your film choice align with the traditional role of hero or heroine? What are your thoughts about this alignment?
If you choose the hero quest, you must align the content briefly to Joseph Campbell’s theories of the hero quest explained within Unit 7: Joseph Campbell’s Hero Quest (all three): separation, initiation, and return.
If you choose the heroine quest, you must carefully relate the film content to the lecture materials explained within Unit 8: Myth, Fairy Tales, and Initiation.
Section II: Mythic Art Please choose a favorite mythic image from one of the units in our course, noting the image title and artist name.
If you choose a Header image, you will find a large version of the image you’ve chosen on the Introduction and Learning Learning Objectives page at the beginning of each Module unit.
How do you feel the image you’ve chosen (making certain to include unit section, artist, and title) succeeds in adapting the myth from which it is inspired?
Also, what artistic details are taking the myth in new directions, building upon familiar themes to make a modern statement? How do you know?
Section III: Closing Thoughts Please consider Odin’s quote in regard to his journey as Vegtam the Wanderer.
“I would change what knowledge I have into wisdom,” said Odin, “so that the things that are to happen will be changed into the best that they may be” (Colum 53).
What have you learned about myth this quarter that you have changed into personal wisdom so that your life will be the best that it can be?
Why has this knowledge been particularly important to you?

You know that you must develop a compelling opening dialog for the show and have decided to focus on Mayor Giuliani and the top five leadership actions he did during the crisis that were important to the first responders and to the people of New York.”
Here are the things I want you to remember:
1. Be creative and make this fun… fun for you and fun for us, the reader
2. Make sure to cover the top five leadership actions that Mayor Giuliani did during this crisis – do not make us dig for them, put them right out there.
