Effects of eating disorder in adolescents
Eating disorders are illnesses in which people experience severe disturbances in their eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions. People with eating disorders typically become pre-occupied with food and their body weight. This can result in weight gain or loss. A number of factors are responsible for eating abnormalities. They include genes, the environment, stressful events which result in illnesses such as anorexia nervosa, substance induction such us reliance on drugs to harness eating, and other metabolic imbalances resulting from chemical imbalances in the brain and avoidant food intake. The 21st generation is characterized with surging eating disorder among the adolescents. About one out of two adolescents in America experience a certain type of eating disorder.
There are a number of effects that are associated with eating disorders among adolescents. Anorexia can lead to health problems due to under nutrition and low body weight. It may result in low blood pressure, low or irregular heartbeats, feeling tired, weak and dizziness, constipation and bloating, irregular periods among adolescent girls, weak bones and delayed puberty due to retarded growth. Anorexia also results in difficulties in focusing and concentration. Remembering things is associated with this disorder. It also results in constant mood changes and emotional problems like feeling alone, sad or depressed, anxiety and fears about gaining or losing weight and thoughts of hurting themselves.
Bulimia results to health problems caused by vomiting, laxatives and diuretics which include low blood pressure, blood in vomit and stool, tooth erosion and cavities swollen cheeks and irregular heartbeats. Adolescents with bulimia suffer emotional instabilities which results in low self-esteem alcohol and other substance abuse and self-destructive thoughts.
Binge eating leads to weight-related problems such as diabetes high blood pressure high cholesterol and triglycerides, fatty liver and sleep apnea.
