The greatest political scandal in the history of the United States is the Richard Nixon controversy. It occurred in the 1970s as a result of the June 17, 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington D.C., the Nixon administration attempted to cover up the incident.

They carried out illegal activities such as harassment of activist groups and political figures using agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The scandal led to discovery of multiple cases of abuse of power by the Nixon administration and finally the resignation f Richard Nixon, the President of the United States on August 9, 1974. This is the only resignation of the US president to date.

It all began with the arrest of five men who had cash on them after breaking into the headquarters at the Watergate Complex on June 17, 1973. Evidence mounted the same year against Nixon’s staff. Some testimonies were handed in by former employees of Nixon and it was discovered that Nixon had a recording system in his offices.

He had recordings of every conversation that happened in his offices. After numerous court battles, the US Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over the tapes to government investigators. It was discovered that the then president had attempted to cover up questionable incidences after the break-in.

The break-in was later discovered that one of the burglars was a Republican Party security aide. This was probably a link connecting the Republican Party and the break-in. the FBI reported that the Watergate incident was only part of a major of a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage on behalf of the Nixon’s re-election committee.

Nixon suffered rejection and in many ways was regarded to as devious, vacillating and profane after the release of the tapes.
