Final Paper: Evolution of a Social Issue and its Impact on LGBTQ Communities

The purpose of this assignment is to focus on a single social issue relevant to LGBTQ communities (see suggestions below) and research the social evolution of this issue over the last 50 – 60 years in the U.S.

Choose a topic that interests you about working with LGBTQ people.  (Possibilities:  youth, families, religion, transgender issues, mental health, health care, aging, violence, criminal justice issues, hate crimes, homelessness, marriage, domestic partnerships, adoption, custody, immigration.)

Research this topic and explore the following:

  • How this subject has been viewed historically over the last 50-60 years in the U.S., including:
    • within the LGBTQ community
    • within the larger society
  • The status of this subject area presently
  • Future concerns regarding this subject

In your paper intro, describe which area you are examining.  It will be important to define whose beliefs and which components of the population you are discussing.  In other words, there are pockets of great acceptance and also pockets of deep ambivalence/discrimination towards these various issues.  Avoid generalizations and/or platitudes in your discussion of your chosen topic. (For example:  Discrimination has improved over time……This sentence is so general that it conveys little meaning.)

Limit your paper to 7-9 pages, typed, double-spaced and single-sided.  Utilize APA guidelines.  Include at least 4 additional, peer-reviewed references (other than class materials).  Please proofread multiple times: for spelling, grammar and content.   A reminder from our course syllabus:

Students are expected to demonstrate Masters’ level competency in their writing skills.  In all written assignments, students are expected to use accurate spelling and punctuation as well as proper grammar.  If in doubt, consult the APA guidelines.  Grades will be lowered if, in the instructor’s opinion, there are multiple writing errors which impede clear comprehension of the student’s paper.    There will be no opportunity for re-writes.
