ESSAY 2: SYNTHESIS ESSAY

Format: The essay must be double-spaced, typed in Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font, and follow other MLA-formatting expectations. Consult your syllabus for an example, and follow that example.

Submissions: Final drafts will be submitted on Canvas in .pdf, .docx, or .doc. No rough drafts will need to be turned in. Submit workshop sheets on the day in which the final draft is due.

Length: The essay should be 4-5 full pages in length. Your grade will be negatively affected if your essay is under four full pages or over five pages.A Works Cited page is required (not included in the 4-5 pages).

CHOOSE ONE OF THE ESSAY TOPICS:

Topic 1: Carefully read Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making us Stupid?” and Clay Shirky’s “Does the Internet Make You Smarter?” Then write an essay in which you convey which author’s stance on the Internet more accurately reflects your own. Use evidence from BOTH essays, a third source, and your own reasoning, observations, experiences, and/or illustrations for support.
 
Topic 2: Carefully read Molly Ivins’s “Get a Knife, Get a Dog, but Get Rid of Guns” and Marc Cooper’s “Gun Control is a Misfire: What liberals and the NRA both got wrong” Then write an essay in which you convey which author’s stance on guns more accurately reflects your own? Use evidence from BOTH essays, a third source, and your own reasoning, observations, experiences, and/or illustrations for support.

GUIDELINES:

1. Offer a fully-developed introductory paragraph or two along with multiple body paragraphs (at least one of which deals with the naysayer) and a strong conclusion paragraph with proposals.

2. Body paragraphs should provide supporting points from the reading you respond to along with more logos/pathos/ethos as well as experiences, observations, and/or illustrations for support of your developed topic sentences.

3. Avoid logical fallacies.

4. Don’t forget to utilize signal phrases and transitions for clarity and be aware of the point-of-view that you are using.

5. Research to find a third source to support your claims.

6. You are required to create a Works Cited page for all of your sources.
