  • INTRODUCTION—In a 7-10-page paper, your introduction will be 2 paragraphs long.
    • First Paragraph: Attention Getter
  • Interesting/Rhetorical Question
  • Paradoxical or Intriguing Statement/Declaration
  • Shocking Statement/Statistic
  • Metaphor/Simile
  • Anecdote
  • Description
  • Quotation
    • Just like any information you put in your paper, these hooks cannot stand alone. Explain, describe, analyze, etc. Make a connection between the hook and your topic.
    • Appealing to PATHOS is acceptable in the introduction.
    • Second Paragraph: Explain the current situation
      • What is the world like “as is” in relation to your issue?
      • Why is it important?
      • What drew you to this topic?
      • You can include comments and quotations from an informal survey you conducted with people you know; you can also explain how other people you know feel about the subject.
      • Mention misconceptions related to your topic, if any.
        • You do not have to do all of these bullet points. They are just suggestions for how you can formulate your introduction.
  • NARRATION: Do this for both the global and local issues
    • Provide background information.
      • What are the details to your problem?
      • What is the struggle?
      • Why is it a unique and complicated issue?
        • Include examples to illustrate the struggle or issue.
        • You can provide official statistics on the problem, current laws related to the topic, or the position the social majority has. This information should be coming from your research, but it should be supporting your ideas!
        • Using credible sources to support you is one way to appeal to ETHOS.
          • If you include the name of an author, also describe the author’s ethos.
            • EX: Peter Bellows, a researcher for the Institute of Really Smart People, explained that intelligence is a matter of “social, personal, and familial communication” (57).
  • PARTITION
    • Now you need to create a section that CLEARLY establishes your claim regarding the global/local aspect of your focus.
    • Explain the WHY of your thesis in a simple way, i.e., it will solve ____ issue.
  • ARGUMENTS/ YOUR SIDE OF THE ISSUE
    • No matter what, you must appeal to LOGOS throughout your paper.
    • Introduce the first perspective you are willing to look at.
      • Explain how your solution will help the situation.
    • Explore one main side of the issue.
    • Provide evidence for any mini-claim you make.
    • Unpack your evidence.
    • Provide more evidence.
    • Unpack your evidence some more.
  • Repeat Step IV as many times as necessary.
  • Keep in mind the length requirements of the essay.
    • For a 7-10-page paper, you will do this at least three times (three different issues regarding your topic).
  • REFUTATION & CONCESSION
    • Now you need to consider the other side of the issue or the opposing argument.
      • Integrate evidence for both local and global aspects of the issue.
    • As you introduce one refutation point, answer it.
    • Provide evidence.
    • Unpack your evidence.
    • Provide more evidence.
    • Unpack your evidence some more.
  • Step IV & V can be reversed in order, depending on the flow of your paper.
  • Your refutation & concession section will probably be more than one paragraph.
  • CONCLUSION
    • Here is where you review the main points.
    • Restate your thesis.
      • DO NOT type the same sentence as the one in your introduction!
      • Present the idea of the thesis, not the thesis itself!
    • Call to action. If you haven’t introduced any sort of solution in your essay, perhaps encourage others to become more aware of your topic.
    • Appealing to PATHOS is acceptable in the conclusion.
    • What does the future look like in relation to your topic?
    • Ka Pow! Really leave me in awe with your last statement because of how important your issue is.
