Topic: Midterm Exams Movie Coursework Paper

The midterm exam consists of two sections: the short answer questions and the essay.
Read and follow the instructions for each section carefully, typing your answers in a document
for submission. Type your name in the document’s header so that it appears on all pages of the
exam. Your answers can be formatted with single-spaced lines but label each answer with the
appropriate section name and question number.
Submit the completed exam in the LEO Assignments folder as a Microsoft Word or PDF file by
the due date: Monday, 14 June.
I. Short Answer Questions (5 points each): Answer all of the following four questions. Each
of the four answers should be presented in a well-organized and fully-developed paragraph (½ to
1 page) that focuses on the topic specified in the question.

  1. Select one particular visual image from Stagecoach and establish the literal purpose of
the image in the film’s narrative and then explain how that image also suggests symbolic
meaning that reinforces themes explored by the film.
  2. Explain why the climax and resolution of Casablanca seem appropriate for a film
produced and released in America in 1942, reflecting and influencing events and attitudes
    of its era.
  3. Focus on the pair of scenes in Roman Holiday that are set in the royal bedroom,
explaining how the two scenes work together to emphasize how Princess Ann has been
changed by the events of the story?
  4. Explain how Ethan and Scar are similar—and how the scene in The Searchers that
depicts their first meeting helps to emphasize these similarities.
II. Essay (10 points): Choose one of the following topics and write a well-organized essay (2-3
pages) that discusses your chosen topic. Your essay should have a clearly established thesis that
emphasizes the significance of the comparisons and contrasts and use paragraphs effectively to
organize your ideas into a logical and coherent structure that supports that thesis.
  5. Compare and contrast Ilsa Lund and Princess Ann, exploring how these two characters
from Casablanca and Roman Holiday reveal various ideas about the portrayal of women
    in mid-20th century America.
  6. Compare and contrast the Ringo Kid and Ethan Edwards, exploring how these two
characters from Stagecoach and The Searchers reveal various ideas about the mythical
    hero of the American West
